TERRA TANGRA

Terra Tangra means the land of Tangra, sole god of the proto-Bulgarians who settled in the Thracian Valley and in the 7th century founded the first Bulgarian state there.
The winery was founded by the Zaichev family during the first decades of the years 2000. They own more than 300 hectares of vineyards located on a plateau of the “Sakar” mountain which is in the south-east of the Thracian Valley near to the border with Turkey and Greece. Sakar is considered the “Bordeaux” of Bulgaria thanks to the quality of its Merlot. The Zaichev family produces wine of a quality that is rare in Bulgaria; their yield is less than 30 hectolitres per hectare and they use a typically Bulgarian grape: Mavrud. It is a variety with a very thick skin, lots of tannin, great acidity and thus is excellent for making wines for laying down. Terra Tangra is the first winery in Bulgaria to have obtained the “BIO” label for production with organic grapes (the 2008 vintage obtained a fantastic gold medal at the 2009 Mundus Vini).
Their wines are greedy, combining a full body and roundness with tannins that have been worked and a velvet delicacy from the best French oak barrels. Dimo Hadjiev, the cellar master and one of the best in Bulgaria, is liberal with quality: his wines always last in the mouth and are as elegant as the best Bulgarians crus. The numerous international awards that they have received bear witness to this (http://www.terratangra.com/lang-en/awards).
